Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins. สงกรานต์ แปลว่า การเคลื่อนที่ การย้ายที่ คือ พระอาทิตย์ย่างขึ้นสู่ราศีเมษ (เดือนเมษายน) นักขัตฤกษ์เนื่องในการขึ้นปีใหม่อย่างเก่าของไทย ซึ่งกำหนดตามสุริยคติ ตรงกับวันที่ ๑๓-๑๔-๑๕ เมษายน ตามปรกติสงกรานต์เป็นพิธีแสดงความยินดีที่ได้มีชีวิตย่างขึ้นปีใหม่ เรียกว่า รับปีใหม่วันปีใหม่ คือวันมหาสงกรานต์ ได้แก่วันที่ ๑๓ เมษายน ส่วนวันที่ ๑๔ เป็นวันเนา คือ วันพักผ่อนหรือทำบุญ และวันที่ ๑๕ เป็นวันเถลิงศก หรือเรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งว่า พระยาวัน หรือ พญาวัน คือวันขึ้นศักราชใหม่
