Flora expo ready for grand opening

Chiang Mai _ Although organisers of The Royal Flora Ratchaphruek expo will breathe a huge sigh of relief when the grand horticultural show opens here today, they still face a number of problems as complaints from various groups continue to plague the controversial exhibition.
Agriculture Department chief Adisak Sreesunpagit said yesterday that he was hoping to see the expo run as smoothly as possible despite admitting that preparations for the event had not been perfect.
The Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 expo, which cost the state around three billion baht to complete, hopes to draw in more than 30,000 visitors on its first day today.
The vast cluster of exhibition gardens, comprising over 3.4 million trees, sits on a 470-rai farming research area in tambon Mae Hia of this northern province.
Among the highlights of the expo is the Royal Pavilion, a cluster of indoor exhibitions and office buildings, plus commercial zones which have been put together under the concept of a giant tree under the sun, representing His Majesty the King's love and care for people.
